What’s up with VAT?
Some of our European backers were dismayed to see that VAT charges will be applied to their order above and beyond the price of the game and the shipping cost. We wanted to talk a little about why and how this is being done.
In short, new laws starting in Europe on Jan. 1, 2021 will require any order fulfilled from within the UK and EU to prove that the correct VAT amount has been collected and paid to those governments. Until now, we have not been liable for these charges and thus have not passed them on to you. These costs do not provide us with additional money in any way, and this doesn’t represent a change in previous policy for us. Some of you have asked us why we then still claim to be EU-friendly while charging VAT. EU-friendly protects EU backers from import taxes, something we have always paid and subsidized for our EU backers. This is still the case.
We understand that this may make it hard for some of you to participate in this project, and we respect that. However, our deep discounts of the products in the Kickstarter are one way we’re attempting to mitigate those new costs. We’re new to this facet of our business. As our overseas audience grows, we know we’ll need to respond to these issues, and we’ll continue to look for the best ways to approach overseas fees and costs in a way that is sustainable to our business and customer-friendly. Currently, however, our games simply are not sold for a large enough margin for us to offer further discounts to offset these costs. We appreciate your understanding, and we respect your choices about whether to spend your hard-earned dollars on our products
